About the Role
AJ Personnel is seeking a dedicated and professional Fieldworker (12 Month Fixed Term Contract – Wits PHRU) to join the team in Bloemfontein. Based at the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU), you will play a critical role in the success of our ongoing TB study. The Wits PHRU has been at the forefront of HIV research, training, and advocacy since 1996, and this position offers an opportunity to contribute to vital public health initiatives within health facilities across the Free State.
Job Purpose
As a Fieldworker (12 Month Fixed Term Contract – Wits PHRU), your primary responsibility is to identify, screen, and recruit eligible participants for the TB study. You will ensure that all enrolment is voluntary and fully informed, maintaining high standards of documentation and participant engagement throughout the study lifecycle in strict accordance with GCP and ethical research guidelines.
Key Performance Areas
- Perform facility-based preparatory tasks, including mapping, process evaluations, surveys, and footfall analysis.
- Recruit study participants for near point-of-care TB testing at designated PHCs, CHCs, and EDs.
- Conduct accurate participant screening and eligibility verification.
- Obtain written informed consent in local languages to ensure participants fully understand the study.
- Carry out individual interviews with enrolled participants.
- Manage the collection of quality sputum specimens and provide coaching to participants on proper production techniques.
- Strictly adhere to infection control protocols, including the correct use of PPE, waste disposal, and decontamination procedures.
- Maintain precise documentation and ensure all reporting is completed on time.
- Uphold study protocols, SOPs, GCP standards, and POPIA regulations.
- Maintain a high level of customer centricity and professionalism when dealing with stakeholders.
- Ensure timesheets and administrative tasks are completed accurately and submitted promptly.
Required Minimum Education and Experience
- Grade 12 certificate.
- Computer literacy (proficient in MS Excel and MS Word).
- At least 1 year of experience in a Fieldworker role.
- At least 1 year of HIV counselling experience.
- Proven ability to function effectively in a complex and demanding environment.
Desirable Skills and Personal Attributes
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluency in local languages (such as Zulu or Sotho) in addition to English is crucial.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities with high attention to detail.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Adaptability, initiative, and the ability to multitask in a pressurized, fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable working with potentially infectious materials.
- Willingness to work shifts and weekends as required by the study.
